NAME: Chestnut
SPECIES: Gastornis giganteus, a likely herbivorous species of giant flightless bird known to reach a height of 6.6 feet.
GENDER: Female (she/her)
ORIENTATION: gay
AFFILIATIONS: A tentative interest in the Silvestre Pride, due to meeting Karvo, Sadia, and Skoyro. Not likely to join, but likely to hang around sometimes to share herbal knowledge with Skoyro.
APPEARANCE: An enormous bird covered in a thick plumage of dappled brown feathers with a lighter underbelly and a dark beak. Has an expressive crest that can be raised to intimidate or convey emotion, though she rarely does so unless she's really shocked. Possesses long and strong legs, with small claws that can't easily be used for gouging flesh, but they are decent for digging and very good for running fast. Her beak is large and formidable and she has a very strong bite, but she mainly uses that strength in order to crush nuts and fruit to eat. Unlike a terror bird, her beak doesn't possess a cutting hook.
INGAME APPERANCE:
GASTORNIS ANATOMY:
PERSONALITY: Timid, anxious, and polite, Chestnut tries her best to avoid confrontation and makes an effort to be nice to everyone who approaches her, even if they aren't particularly nice in return. She doesn't have a whole lot of confidence in herself and often second-guesses her own instincts. She can be a good friend and listener to those with the patience to earn her trust, but don't expect her to fight for your sake -- she'll only resort to violence if there's no other options, despite her terrifying strength. Above all things, she has a preoccupation on the "music" of the world around her; she often uses sound, be it of someone's voice or background noise, to discern whether or not a situation is "good". She is also a talented vocal mimic and can copy many sounds almost exactly, similar to the present-day superb lyrebird. This serves as both a hobby and a very successful form of self defense.
Chestnut also has an interest in plants aside from being food. She has a knack for telling which plants are harmful and which ones are not, due to several years of travel through many different places. She's likely to approach Lazarus residents about local flora and their uses from time to time, to expand her mental archive. Herbalists are more likely to gain her trust quickly than anyone else.
STRENGTHS: Size, powerful legs, speed, mimicry, strong beak, pretty good at not pissing people off
WEAKNESSES: Lack of confidence, easily intimidated, hesitant to fight even when necessary, really bad anxiety, hatred for violence (in a land where violence is the norm this tends to be a stressful trait to have)

STORY PROGRESSION
Entered Lazarus and initially lived in the jungle. Met the dire wolf Aleese while investigating the mountains to see if they would make a better place to live, and had an amiable conversation with her -- which ended in learning some rather disturbing things about the wolf. Chestnut ultimately decided that though the music of Aleese's voice was pleasant, the music of Aleese's personality was discordant in nature, and made an excuse to leave before Aleese's (probably)well-meaning actions resulted in the wolf knowing where Chestnut lived.
On another expedition outside the jungle, this time into Cascus Forest, Chestnut encountered a terror bird chick trapped in a bush. After freeing the little bird by using her powerful beak to crush the branches keeping her trapped, Chestnut met two dinofelis: Karvo, the chick's caretaker, and Skoyro, Karvo's father. Though initially thinking that they were going to eat the little bird, Chestnut ended up having a good conversation with both felines when she realized their intentions were pure. After giving some pointers to Karvo about chick care, she engaged in a lengthy discussion with Skoyro about local herbs. The danger of two rogue cave lions nearby ended the discussion, and Chestnut hid the chick and the dinofelis cub from sight as Skoyro confronted them. Though, when Yuura returned from the desert, Chestnut was forced to flee rather than confront the fearsome smilodon.
Chestnut returned to the area around the Silvestre Pride den a few days later to gather chamomile and encountered a smilodon cub named Maji. Maji vanished back into the forest when Yuura appeared, chasing a disoriented Zian and attempting to talk to him. Once again Chestnut never spoke directly to Yuura, and instead talked to Aleese, who was injured and staying at the den to recuperate. She gave Aleese willow bark to help her with her wounds, and Aleese declared that she now considered Chestnut a real friend. Chestnut took her leave when Yuura became a little too interested in watching her.
While in the swamp, Chestnut briefly encountered a wild horse named Kelpie, who fled when three megalanias appeared in the area. A lone barinasuchus attempted to eat Chestnut, but the trio of giant lizards defended her for reasons unknown and allowed her to flee.
While fruit-gathering in the jungle a few days later, Chestnut encountered Yuura. She was nervous at their meeting, and rather confused as to why the Silvestre Pride leader was wandering around the jungle all of a sudden, but the smilodon was amiable enough and did not do anything startling this time. Chestnut explained the music of the world to her, and admitted to knowing Skoyro, and then they went their separate ways after Chestnut assured Yuura that she was not planning to be a cub-eater any time soon.
While gathering herbs at the flower meadow, Chestnut had brief encounters with several creatures, including Aleese, Cudjo, Hyakuya, Ido Akumu, and Terentios.
Chestnut ventured into the caves to look for puffball mushrooms and other plants, and discovered Skoyro there talking to Yuura. Skoyro assisted Chestnut by giving her advice on what herbs to take and making a makeshift carrying device out of vines to strap the huge puffball mushrooms to the bird's back so she could take them back to her nest. In return, Chestnut discussed some aspects of the jungle with the dinofelis, such as the cleverness of the monkeys who were raiding her stores and strange carnivorous jungle plants. Leaving the caves, Chestnut promised Skoyro that she would show him some interesting parts of the jungle if he ever came there, unaware that the jungle was the Silvestre Pride's new home.
When bringing back a large piece of agate from the river, Chestnut spotted Yuura lying on the ground next to an elk corpse and approached her. They had a relatively civil conversation, with Chestnut being nervous and the smilodon asking her if she had seen a group of painted cats or a lone male smilodon. Chestnut hadn't seen the male smilodon, but she had seen five sets of feline tracks in the snow near the cave entrance a few days before, flecked with dye and blood and signs of something very large being dragged into the tunnels. Yuura told Chestnut to stay away from the painted cats and the male smilodon, as they were both dangerous.
The creodont cub Venator appeared, distracting Yuura. He gave her a fish while Chestnut watched warily, unsure of the otterlike creature's species. Aleese chose this time to jump out of the bushes and give everyone a scare, which caused Yuura to turn around and snarl, which then caused Chestnut to mimic a daeodon scream in frantic self defense, which scared everybody! Good times. Chestnut felt extremely guilty afterwards. After apologies were made by both her and Aleese, Chestnut warned the dire wolf about the felines Yuura had told her about a few minutes before. Aleese, being endlessly curious, bombarded Chestnut and Yuura with questions about what danger these parties posed, which forced Yuura into revealing that the male smilodon was her father and that he was attacking random strangers for reasons yet unknown to her. Through the conversation Yuura also revealed that an enemy told her to be wary of the painted felines, and that her pride had wiped out a pride that had lived in the jungle, which shocked Chestnut. Chestnut apologized for her revulsion, which led Yuura and Aleese to wonder how she could not understand the sentiment that led Yuura to massacre the rival pride. Chestnut explained the nuances of life in her old gastornis flock to the confusion of the carnivores, and it ended up being a sort of philosophical discussion about the differences between her way of life and that of Aleese and Yuura. Venator, being a cub, got bored and Yuura ended up leaving to take him home. Chestnut left as well after finding her agate again.
Chestnut was looking for figs in the jungle when she spotted Skoyro (accompanied by Karvo and Zian) from afar, and heard him growl at the sight of Yuura and a painted cat conversing in a friendly manner. She was confused by this, too, and hid behind a tree to greet Skoyro. Skoyro wouldn't tell her what was wrong, but soon Yuura came over and an argument began between the felines about Skoyro's mistrust of Yuura's behavior, while Chestnut looked on in fear andguarded the cubs Karvo and Zian. After the conversation came to a sort of conclusion, with both cats emotionally exhausted and the painted cat having fled, Chestnut helped Skoyro lead the cubs back to the den.
She returned later to give Skoyro carnivorous plant snippings in order to cheer him up, but he wasn't there; instead, Yuura, Lath, and a whale were present. The painted jaguar Tezcatlipoca appeared on the cluster of roots and vines on top of the den to tell Lath that he was here to escort her home, and he and Yuura got into a fight. During this, Chestnut sang with Lath and the whale, for lack of anything else to do but drown out the shouting and snarling atop the den...However, she stopped when both felines tumbled from their perch and landed hard on the ground. She gave Yuura willow bark for her pain and set Tez'ss broken wrist before dragging him into the Silvestre den where he would be dry, though unfortunately she decided to place him on Yuura's bed.
She came back the next day with herbs to replenish Skoyro's stock, and noticed that he was present at the den and looking angry. Nervously she explained the reason why Tezcatlipoca was at the den, and tried to distract him from his bitterness by talking about the carnivorous plants she had brought. She was approached by Zian and talked to the cub about his clan's relationship with birds, desert herbs, and other things until he went to sleep.
Chestnut assisted Skoyro briefly in treating the wounded after a daeodon attacked the Silvestre. She was confused about what was said and Skoyro's behavior, as she was unaware of what had happened to him in the past few days...
